Saying, “I do” in Myanmar

Witnessing the marriage of one of our colleagues was a joy. A Kachin friend at my side explained the meaning of the bride’s whole family accompanying her with gifts as she entered (helping to send her off into her new family with what the new couple would need), and the gifting by the bride of a traditional sack and sword to the groom (providing what he would need to be successful in providing and protecting their family). No explanation was needed to interpret the happiness of the newlyweds!
