Memorial Garden Labyrinth

Library Labyrinth

While many modern outdoor labyrinths were first built adjacent to churches or on private property, installing labyrinths in non-religious public spaces has gained momentum in recent years. Libraries and labyrinths are two of my favorite places to visit, so when I came across the five-circuit labyrinth behind the local public library in Sister Bay, Wisconsin, my heart skipped a beat.

The memorial garden that houses the labyrinth was designed by John Meredith and installed by Lakeshore Landscape and Design. It was completed in 2013. The unusual spiral entrance beyond the labyrinth adds a bit of whimsy.

The back story to the labyrinth and the garden were explained in an article in the Door County Pulse. “The Sister Bay-Liberty Grove library commission received a legacy gift to pay for landscaping and 10 years of maintenance of library grounds. The labyrinth was created to help guide visitors looking for a meditative experience.”

Much thought was given about how to create an environment that would both fit in the natural landscape and be eco-friendly. Native plants surround the labyrinth as do limestone outcroppings which can also be seen throughout Door County, Wisconsin. Green and brown colors of are seldom used in labyrinth construction but they help this labyrinth harmonize with other garden features.

While walking this pathway, I was reminded of how every labyrinth exists in a unique setting that both influences those who come and offers the possibility of peaceful contemplation.

Invitation to Contemplation:
Can you imagine walking through the library of your life and arriving at the center of your experience? What might you discover there?
